Safety Webinar: Examination of a hyperbaric chamber fire
September 23, 2026
Andrew Melnyczenko will present "examination of a hyperbaric chamber fire" to discuss the events, investigation, and findings related to the fatal chamber fire in Troy, MI in January 2025
Time: 7:30pm Eastern
Meeting Summary:
This presentation examines the January 31, 2025 hyperbaric chamber fire in Troy, Michigan, providing a detailed analysis of the incident, its underlying causes, and the broader safety lessons for the hyperbaric medicine community. Based on a site visit conducted on February 5, 2025, investigators Francois Burman and Andrew Melnyczenko identified a static discharge as the ignition source within a 2.0 ATA oxygen‑enriched environment. As noted in the document, “Fire was caused by static discharge in a high-oxygen environment at 2.0 ATA” and “Materials worn by the patient ignited instantly.” The rapid escalation of the fire, including the rupture of the chamber door seal within three seconds, underscores the extreme hazard posed by synthetic materials, inadequate grounding, and procedural lapses in high‑oxygen settings.
